Usually, during the relocation process, you will have plenty of items that will not be making the trip to your new home alongside you. These belongings can be quite valuable to someone else, however. Therefore, your best option is to donate these items instead of simply throwing them away. Of course, you can also sell some of your items. The added benefit of donating is that many of the organizations will come by your place and pick the items up. You will not need to go through any negotiations, etc. You can always have your moving company, such as Simplify Valet Storage & Moving, bring the items to a charity of your choice, as well. But there are many charities to which you can donate unwanted items in NY before a move. You may want to know which items go where, so to speak.

Where to donate unwanted items in NY before a move?

As there is no shortage of charity organizations that accept donations, we’ve decided to “group” them by the type of items they accept. Here are your options:

    • Places that accept just about everything
    • Where to donate your furniture and other unwanted household items in NY before a move?
    • Best places in NY to donate books
    • Donate unwanted electronic items in NY before a move
    • Where to donate clothing and textiles?

Of course, some organizations will accept various item types. You may want to donate to a charity of your choice, or to a cause you identify with. However, some charities are “specialized” in certain items and can ensure efficient distribution. If you are going with residential movers for your relocation, you might want to ask them for advice as well. They have “been around the block” for quite a while, and may have unique insights. The more you know, the better, right?

Places that accept just about everything

To start with, there are organizations that will take just about any item from your hands, provided it is in a good condition. Examples include the Salvation Army, Housing Works, GreenDrop, Hour Children, etc. There are some exceptions, of course, but for the most part, every organization will take a large variety of item types. You will not need to hire packing services, they will sort the items on their own. But before you sort out your stuff for donation, you will want to check their websites first. You can find up-to-date information on which items they accept at this time. While most of these organizations take almost anything, there are times when they might be overwhelmed with a particular item type, such as furniture.

Where to donate your furniture and other unwanted household items in NY before a move?

Speaking of furniture, there are two charities that will accept most of it, Habitat for Humanity and Housing Works. The list of items that they accept includes not only furniture such as beds, sofas, and armoirs, but mirrors, stoves, windows, refrigerators, and similar. This means that you may not need to use storage services to store such items, you can simply donate them! These organizations usually utilize “green” electric trucks for their pickups.

Additionally, if you want to donate some of your household items such as blankets, small appliances, bed linens, etc., you can try Nazareth Housing. It is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency shelters to residents of New York, as well as supportive housing. All of the items need to be in good condition, though.

Best places in NY to donate books

If you have a lot of books that you are leaving behind, you can easily sell them at some bookstores, such as Strand. You can sell them for cash or store credit but not every book might be eligible for that. They will always take donations, though, so you need not worry about that. Another great place to donate books to is the Brooklyn Public Library, as well as NYC Books Through Bars. If you are donating to the latter, do note that they do not take hardcovers, due to prison regulations. They take books on various topics that concern improvement, such as history, dictionaries, languages, and so on. This might be the best place for your old books, as they can have the largest impact on someone’s life.

Donate unwanted electronic items in NY before a move

Until 2015, NYC residents used to simply dump their electronics in the trash. That was the easiest way to get rid of faulty, or old, electronic devices, after all. However, since 2015 it is illegal to do so. Therefore, if you want to get rid of your old TV, laptop, or any other electronic device, you need to visit a special waste drop-off site. There are many such sites around the city, but it might be a drag to get to one of them. Also, you might need to pay a fee for them to take some of your items.

There are other places that will take your electronics, such as EnAct and NYC’s Materials for the Arts program, as well as the Department of Sanitation. However, if you are going with the DoS, you will need to schedule an appointment in advance.

Where to donate clothing and textiles?

Lastly, if you want to donate some of your old clothes, you have several options at your disposal. First, you can donate them to a thrift shop, such as Le Point Value. Or you can choose a nonprofit organization such as The Bowery Mission. Additionally, there are textile donation bins that you can find at many of the city’s green markets. The GrowNYC program accepts handbags, belts, and shoes as well. Finally, if you have rolls of cloth or any large pieces of fabric, you can send them to the Materials for the Arts. They will happily take them off your hands!
