Tips to make friends in NYC after the move

    Evolving a new friendship is a rocky road, even in the place you’re all too familiar with. But, in a whole new city, it almost seems impossible. Fortunately, this cannot be further from the truth, especially in NYC. The city is home to more than eight million people. Among that many residents, you’ll find plenty who share your views of the world. Furthermore, meeting them can be all too easy. There are so many venues and events here, it will be almost impossible not to make friends in NYC after the move. Here’s some advice to help you get in the game after your NYC movers help you settle in.

    Make the best of “social” in social media

    One of the best ways to make friends in NYC after the move or, should we say “before”, is through social media. Everyone has it, everybody uses it, even though some try to deny it. Therefore, these platforms can be an excellent starting point to connect with like-minded people. And, the best thing is: it takes almost no effort.

    Social networks are an amazing starting point to meet friends in NYC after the move.

    For instance, let’s say you’re a jazz lover. You can search for “jazz NYC” on Facebook, Meetup, Eventbrite, or any other social network of choice. They might yield different results, but the essence will remain the same: you’ll find groups or events where you’ll meet people who share your passions and interests. So, it doesn’t matter which platform you choose. Pick the one you love using, do a quick search, join a local group – et voila! You’re good to go!

    Reconnect with old friends

    If you’re not in the mood to make new friends immediately after the move, you can try and rekindle the old ones. Contrary to popular belief – this is a small world. So, there’s a good chance you’ll already know someone in NYC, who you lost track of a while ago. Maybe someone who recently moved house to NYC, too! Granted, getting back in touch with them might feel awkward at first. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. A few drinks, a bit of reminiscing about the good old days, and chances are, you’ll pick up right where you left off. Therefore, don’t be afraid to make that first step. More often than not, the person on the other end will meet you halfway.

    Connect with your friends’ friends

    Your friends have friends, that can be your friends if you ask your friends to connect you with their friends. That wasn’t confusing, at all. So, let’s take it a bit slower.

    There’s a great chance your friends know someone in NYC. They will be more than happy to hook you up with them if you’re willing to ask. And you should! Even if you know nothing about this new person, you already have one thing in common: the same friend. So, you’ll have something to talk about right off the bat. A simple “How did you two meet?” is a great opener and can lay the groundwork for interesting conversation, that can result in an awesome friendship.

    Meet the neighbors

    Sometimes, you don’t have to go far to make new friends. They can be right next door – quite literally, in this case. Meeting the neighbors might just be one of the easiest ways to make friends in NYC after the move. There are a few ways you can choose to go about it:

    • Introduce yourself – the simplest solutions are, often, the best ones. So, don’t hesitate to knock on a few doors and let people know they have a new, amazing neighbor;
    • Be friendly – a wide smile and a polite greeting go a long way. After a short while, they’ll grow into a friendly chatter – or something more!
    • Offer assistance – the smallest act of kindness can mean the world to someone. And it’s a great way to get on everyone’s good side;
    • Ask for assistance – the above point goes both ways. After moving, you’ll need some assistance, even if you only moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Not only they’ll assist you with post-moving tasks, but they can be a treasure trove of useful info. And, in most cases, they’re more than willing to share;
    • Throw a housewarming party – this is an amazing way to meet all of your neighbors at once. And not only that but to see their dynamics and immerse yourself in it. There’s no doubt they’ll appreciate the effort. After all, who doesn’t love a good party?

    Hang out with co-workers

    Bonding with co-workers can be more than just boosting that team spirit. In fact, it’s an excellent way to make friends. You already know each other, have something in common and hang out every day. So, why not elevate that to another level?

    A drink with co-workers a day keeps the loneliness away.

    Of course, sometimes this means you’ll have to be proactive. Invite your colleagues for a drink after work or grab lunch together. After a few “dates” like these, suggest you go out for a night on town. There’s a great chance they’ll accept and even invite their old friends to join. This only goes to your advantage, as you’ll get to deepen the bond and expand your circle of acquaintances. And, when you’re new in town, every friendship is a welcome one, no matter how superficial it may be at the beginning.

    On the flip side, make it your business to accept as many invitations to social or networking events. Aside from meeting potential friends, you’ll also have the opportunity to make new business contacts. Needless to say, both of those will benefit you greatly, either in private or business life.

    Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone

    The adjustment period after the move can be quite daunting. You’re alone and everything is new. At moments, it might even seem scary. But – it’s not. Moving is all about adventure. It’s about meeting interesting people, exploring interesting places, and partaking in exciting activities. And, if there’s something NYC abounds in, it’s the opportunities to do exactly that. All you need to do is muster a tiny bit of courage and will to open yourself to the world and embrace it all. That’s all it takes to make friends in NYC after the move. So, get out there and make each day a thrilling new adventure!
